Editorial Design Dinn-journal
Designing a Platform for Creativity & Recognition
To develop a publication with a level of editorial design that matched the creative excellence of UDEM’s Industrial Design program. For the first time, the school aimed to produce a printed journal that would gather top student projects, interviews, awards, and academic highlights. Dr. Cristina Guzmán launched the initiative with a clear vision: to create a platform that celebrates and showcases the quality of design education at the university.
From the very beginning, we focused on creating an editorial design approach that was visually striking, conceptually grounded, and aligned with the department’s core values. The name Dinn combines DI (Industrial Design) and NN (Innovation), representing the interdisciplinary and forward-thinking spirit of the program.
Over time, the journal evolved from showcasing individual projects on the cover to fully illustrated covers that reflect the collective themes, moods, and conversations happening within the university each semester. These themes are thoughtfully aligned with the World Design Organization’s global agenda, which further reinforces the journal’s relevance and purpose in the international design education space.
Each edition brings a refreshed color palette — always grounded by UDEM’s iconic black and yellow — that supports the visual language of the featured illustration. Every issue becomes an opportunity to explore new layouts, structures, and visual narratives through a refined editorial design lens.
The evolution of Dinn Journal from a small academic publication to a nationally recognized platform — with a strong editorial design system that adapts every semester while maintaining a consistent identity. Its ability to visually narrate the culture, values, and creative pulse of an entire program makes it more than a magazine — it’s a design archive in motion.
Dinn Journal is now approaching its 10th anniversary with the release of Issue 18. What began as a modest internal publication has grown into the flagship editorial face of UDEM’s Industrial Design department. It’s a central piece in the school’s national and international promotion efforts and a respected platform for the work of students, alumni, and faculty.
The consistent investment in thoughtful, evolving editorial design has made Dinn Journal a recognized reference in academic design publishing. Each edition is a creative record of the program’s intellectual, social, and artistic growth. More than a magazine, it is a living archive — a reflection of the university’s design culture, values, and commitment to innovation.
